Allie

Frisbee in the NH Snow

More: Deaf Dogs Rock! ...Allie was born deaf in South Georgia. Living in New Hampshire, and having lost our 15 1/2 year old dog in 2015 after a good, long life, we found her and her brother, Jax, then 2 1/2 years on Petfinder.com. With no kill shelters up north, through Petfinder, we found a southern U.S. rescue organization that had volunteers who would, after their full-time jobs wrapped on a Friday every two weeks, drive dogs in south Georgia kill shelters up north at five pre-determined spots in New England. Fostering for 18 months, every potential family wanted her (non-deaf) brother, Jax, but not her, for fear of the work with a deaf dog. Having just lost our beloved dog, Cleo, one month earlier, we had adapted to Cleo's age-onset deafness for the last 18+ months of her life - so no problem here! So we took both! (Kudos to the shelter, and their foster parents, for keeping this "bonded pair" together) Planning for retirement in the coming years my husband and I moved to, ironically, Allie & Jax's birth state of Georgia in 2018! At 11 1/2 she (and her brother) continues to live her full and best life and rests after a hard day at work in the yard, and after her daily frisbee escapades, in her Orvis dog nests scattered around the house. She doesn't know she's deaf - the world is fine and full to her! And frisbee ROCKS! She lives for daily frisbee - rain, snow, sleet, hail, no matter the temperature. (Thinking her eleven-year old self may prefer the warmer climate of Georgia to New Hampshire's snow frisbee sport, but maybe not looking back fondly to her last year with us in New Hampshire in this photo!) #deaf_dogs_rule
