MIKE
Are you talkin' to me?
Owner: Eve
Breed: GSD
Age: 1 year 2.5 mos
More: Mike is an Autism Assistance Dog. He performs a variety of tasks. Behavior Intervention: Mike literally hugs his handler during fits of rage, holding down his arms & hands preventing his handler from hitting himself in the head. Calming During Meltdowns: Mike repeatedly nudges his handler's hand, forcing his handler to pet him. Stroking a dog's coat regulates a human's heartbeat. Mike also licks his handler's face which releases endorphins in the brain, making him feel calm & relaxed. Blocking or Creating Space: Mike maneuvers himself between his handler and others preventing others from invading his handler's personal space. Comfort While Sleeping: Mike sleeps with his handler. In the event of night terrors or his handler simply wakes up confused during the night, Mike is right there to calm & comfort him. Ceates a Social Bridge: Having a service dog has made his handler quite popular. Others approach him and Mike becomes the topic of conversation. Conversation is a difficult task for a person with autism. Others can pet Mike, if they ask first and if Mike chooses to let the person approach closer. Creates Laughter: Sometimes Mike gets the "zoomies" running back and forth or simply acts goofy, jumping around like a bucking bronco creating joy, happiness and laughter in his handler. Best Friend: Mike is his handlers best friend. There is hardly a moment that they are not together.
