Sammie

Listening for Rabbits in the field

More: Sammie was bought on a whim the summer I graduated high school. I was planning on taking a semester off and traveling around to camp and live out of my car. I felt i needed a companion for this journey. So i did what any 19 year old would do and went to stake out the Walmart parking lot to see what mixed breed puppies were being sold out of the trunks of peoples cars without my parents permission. This was a favorite pass time for my sister and I growing up. Many dogs were bargained for in the Walmart parking lot and came home with us against my parents wishes and often without their knowledge. She was one of three being sold out of a station wagon’s trunk that day. She was the runt of the pack, and the sleepiest. So i figured she would be the calmest. I was wrong. She was both the sweetest, and worst, dog i had ever owned that first year we had her. Within the first year she destroyed a sofa, window seals, countless books, and had stolen more fresh plates of food than could be counted. No toy lasted more than a few minutes and nothing was safe if it hit the floor. After flunking out of her first dog training course, she had to be shipped off for a 4 month board and train center where she finally learned some manners. I tell people she was the best, and most expensive, 20 dollars i ever spent. When people ask what breed she is i tell them that she is the “Walmart breed” because she is a little bit of everything. She did eventually travel with me and live out of the car and campsites for a while and loved a every minute of it. She is an older girl now but still loves hiking and camping and will do anything to “go for a ride” in the car. Toys still never last more than a few minutes in her company, and every once and a while she sneaks a taste of unattended food to remind us she is still a dog. She loves my family and has been a loyal and loving companion for me over the years though, and i wouldn't trade her for anything.
