My Colorado 14er Retirement Hike, Handies Peak!

More: Scout came into our lives as a puppy and quickly stole our hearts. An active girl with a clever mind, she certainly never slowed down the first few years of our lives together in downtown Chicago. Scout spent her weekends swimming in Lake Michigan and catching frisbees at the parks. We moved to Colorado in 2016 and Scout quickly became our trail blazing sidekick. We spent all of our free time together hiking, conquering new mountains, and visiting local breweries. Scout also graduated to the role of big sister in 2019 and welcomed our new daughter as if she was always one of the pack. In December of 2019 Scout had been limping for several weeks. We received the devastating news after an x ray that Scout had canine osteosarcoma. We visited an oncologist to discuss options and ultimately made the decision to amputate Scout’s front leg on January 3, 2020. Scout can teach us humans a lot about resiliency. She improved little by little everyday after her surgery and by March of 2020 she was back on the trails with us. We spent the majority of the pandemic together on the trails. This included climbing her last and final 14er (Colorado’s highest peaks) in July of 2020 which is pictured here. Scout continued to receive chemotherapy treatments following her amputation and then regular check ups to see if the cancer metastasized. During this time Scout continued to thrive as a tripawd. Unfortunately, in November 2020 her regular check up showed that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. After trying one addition round of chemo we enrolled Scout into a clinical trial. She successfully completed the 6 month trial in July 2021. In January, Scout turned 9 and marked her 2 year anniversary of her amputation. She is still enjoying two frisbee sessions a day, regular swimming, and lots of love. She is a remarkable dog with a remarkable story. Canine osteosarcoma does not have great prognosis, but we are hoping by sharing her story that we can help others who receive this devastating diagnosis. Here’s to our best girl ❤️
