More: Why Bodhi? While cramming for the test of a new puppy we reread an old favorite, “The Art of Raising a Puppy” by the Monks of New Skete. A simple phrase sparked my imagination … “Dogs root us to life.” As a lifelong tree hugger, the imagery of a tree stabilized by its deep roots against outside forces was very appealing. The Bodhi Tree, an actual tree in India under which Buddha gained enlightenment—an awakening—marries beautifully with my neglected spiritual core. Indeed, as I spend quality floor time with our new (neglected) shelter pup, awakened again to the marvel of life, I feel more grounded already.
